BURNETT
CAPTURES WIN IN PHOTO FINISH OF NON-QUALIFIER'S EVENT AT VICTORIA 200 WEEKEND;
DANE KELLER AND BILL RAMPE SCORE CHECKERS
FULTON, NY....In a photo
finish after 25 laps on a slick daytime racing surface, "Full Bore" Tim
Burnett picked up the win in Sunday's Modified Non-Qualifiers race on the
final day of Nice 'N' Easy Grocery Shops Victoria 200 Weekend. In
other racing action, Dane Keller scored his first career IMCA Modified
win and Bill Rampe made it two victories in two visits to Fulton by taking
the checkers in the 4 Cylinders.
Burnett jumped into the
early lead in the 25-lap Modified Non-Qualifiers race and pulled out a
few car lengths on the field. Steve Hulszier and Gus Schmidt settled
into third and fourth behind Smokey Warren while Ted Lamb moved in on them.
Lamb found the outside groove to his liking and used it to move into the
runnerup spot and chase after leader Burnett. Further back in the
field, some good three wide racing was taking place as John Barker battled
with a host of others for positions just outside the top five.
Lamb hounded Burnett through
some mid race restarts, but Burnett was able to hold Lamb at bay by using
the oustide groove. They fought back and forth lap after lap.
As the white flag waved, Lamb was able to stick his nose inside of Burnett
in turn one, but Burnett held him off. Coming off the final corner,
Lamb tried a criss-cross move, which left the win to be decided in a drag
race to the finish line. Burnett held on by inches to take the win
over Lamb and a $1,200 payday. Steve Hulsizer, Barker, and Ron Richardson
rounded out the top five finishers.
34 cars returned from Saturday's
action to participate in Sunday's program. Heats were won by Smokey
Warren, Burnett, and Roy Shields. All 34 cars started the program.
The IMCA Modified Championship
25-lapper started with a great three wide race for the lead between Randy
Hall, Tim Murphy, and Don Alvord. All three drivers took their turns
on the point in the early portion of the feature event. Sean Lias
moved forward in the field along with Bob Bradt and Dane Keller, and they
eventually settled into the top three spots.
The second half of the race
belonged to Bradt, as he held off all challenges. Keller moved past
Lias for the second spot and began to apply pressure. With four laps
to go, Dane Keller found his opportunity and got past Bradt for the lead
and held it to the finish for a very popular win, his first career checkered
flag in an IMCA Modified. Bradt was second, followed by Lias, Ron
O'Neil, and Rob Keller. IMCA Modified heats were won by Alvord, Murphy,
and Bob Bradt.
Bill Rampe made his second
visit of the season to the Fulton Speedway a profitable one as he dominated
the 20-lap 4 Cylinder Championship, leading all 20 laps of the contest.
Jim Money and Bill Coyle were able to battle their way to second and third,
with Mark Warner and Bob Doolitle rounding out the top five.
4 Cylinder heats were won by Rampe, Harold Humphrey, and Mark Warner.
