239 COMPETITORS SHOW UP FOR OPENING DAY OF FULTON'S VICTORIA 200 IN 1987
FULTON, NY...Eight Small Block Modified heats
opened the agenda for the "VICTORIA 200" Weekend Saturday at Fultoh Speedway.
The Late Models, Street Stocks and Pure Stocks were also in action, making up
the 239 car field.
24 drivers locked themselves into the "VICTORIA 200" on the first day of
qualifying. The eight heat wins went to Danny Johnson, Tom Mayberry, Jimmy
Norton, Billy Pauch, Bob Podolak, Pat Ward, Mike Ricci and Donnie Wetmore. The
remainder of the starting grid will be determined in the second day of
qualifying. Four consolations and two non-qualifiers are slated.
The Street Stocks and Pure Stocks ran complete shows. Late Model stand Russ
Marsden picked up a ride in the Todd Emmons #9 and promptly put the car in
Victory Lane. Marsden took the lead from Billy Burton on lap five and was never
headed.
Although Marsden had a relatively easy time of it in the feature, there was a
lot of dicing going on behind him. Several drivers were able to get into the top
five during the feature, but for many of them it was short lived as tire wear
became a factor.
1987 Street Stock Track Champion Bill Clark moved into second on lap 15 and
tried to close the gap on Marsden. Marsden however had too much and went on to
the win. Clark was second with Tom Kinsella, Mark Wallace and Tom Duell rounding
out the top five.
The Pure stocks also ran a complete show on Saturday and put on an impressive
race in the caution less feature. Ed Scruton went wire to wire to score his
first Pure Stock feature win.
The win didn't come easy for Scruton as multi-time feature winner Dave Mannise
kept the pressure on throughout the 20 lap grind. At the checkers it was Scruton
by a car length over Mannise, Lonson Britton, Pat Abold and Shawn Donath rounded
out the top five. Russ Marsden Jr. won the B Main.
The Late Models ran three qualifying heats. They were captured by At Whitaker,
L.D. Bezner and Dave House, the two Late Model consi's will fill out the
starting grid for their VICTORIA 200 Weekend feature.
