DECKER ROMPS VICTORIA 200 RULES MINI-SERIES SPECIAL TUESDAY AT FULTON SPEEDWAY
FULTON, NY (August 21) – The last time the Victoria 200 Rules Modified Mini Series ran at the Fulton Speedway, Billy Decker lost by a bumper in a photo finish to Gypsum teammate Pat Ward. On Tuesday night Decker made sure that didn’t happen again, Decker grabbed the lead from Ryan Phelps on lap-6 and never looked back dominating the 35-lap, $2,000 to win feature. Points leader Jeremy Pitcher made a late race pass on Larry Wight to win the 20-lap Sportsman main, Bill Clark Jr won his sixth feature of the year in the Pro Stocks and Mark Johnston won the 4-Cylinder Enduro.
Ryan Phelps jumped out to a quick lead in the 35-lap Modified feature followed by Willy Decker in the Kyle Lew No.09. While Phelps and Decker were battling for the top spot Billy Decker was coming to the front in rapid fashion grabbing the lead on lap-6 from Phelps. After Decker took off from the rest of the field the best race on the track was between Ryan Phelps and Jimmy Phelps. Jimmy Phelps moved to second place on lap-13. From there Jimmy Phelps tried every trick in the book to get by Ryan Phelps as the two raced nose to tail and side by side, finally with two to go Jimmy Phelps was able to get by Ryan Phelps. Without any yellow flag periods to tighten up the field Decker won by almost a half a track, lapping up to eighth place. Jimmy Phelps, Ryan Phelps, Willy Decker and Pat Ward were the top five. Bobby Varin, Vic Coffey, Tom Sears Jr, Chad Phelps and Roy Bresnahan completed the top ten.
"Ryan (Phelps) ran a great race, he was quick. We just happened to find the right groove quicker than anyone else," Said Decker after parking his Gypsum Wholesalers, No.91 in victory lane. Decker also related not having yellows and knowing how to race in lapped traffic was key.
In the most exciting race of the night was the 20-lap Sportsman feature. Curt Prevo and teenager Larry Wight has the fans excited as the two raced, swapping the lead back and forth, with neither really gaining an advantage on the other. While this was going on Jeremy Pitcher worked his way to the front running down the two leaders. On lap-20 Pitcher was able to slide by Prevo and set his sights on Wight. Working the bottom Pitcher was able to get under Wight and take the lead on the 23rd-lap. From there Pitcher drove a flawless race grabbing the win. With the victory Pitcher increased his point lead over John Pietrowicz, (730 to 678) with two point races left to decide the 2007 track champion.
After exiting his MDV Construction, No.14, Pitcher talked about his win. "My crew always gives me a great race car, the slicker the better. Larry (Wight) drove a great race, he left me a opening to get make a clean pass and the rest was history." Pitcher also said before he made the pass for the lead he was trying the top side of the speedway in case he needed to up there because the two leaders were running the bottom. In the end it was the bottom that got him the victory.
The Pro Stocks 20-lap feature emotions and on track contact was high. After things calmed down Bill Clark Jr and a smoking Rusty Marsden had a good battle for the lead. Clark and Marsden battled back and forth for the lead, Clark had too much at the finish grabbing his track leading sixth victory of 2007. Marsden, Pete Stefanski, Fred Dennis and Adam Hunt completed the top five. Adam Peters, Scott Conover, Mike Vaughn, Rob Seavy and Jim Evans rounded out the top ten.
"We really wanted to beat Stefanski," related Clark about beating invader Pete Stefanski who has won features when invades the Fulton oval. "The car was perfect tonight I can’t thank my guys enough," finished Clark after his win.
Mark Johnston won the 25-lap 4-Cylinder Enduro over Jon Shumway, Les Baker, Zach Petrie, and Bill Inch.
