FULTON, NY...Joey Williams pocketed
$1,000 last Wednesday at Fulton Speedway by winning the 25-lap
DIRT Sportsman special. Williams beat Kevin Bates in a photo
finish to earn his first ever victory at Fulton Speedway.
Williams edged out Bates by .046 seconds. The Scotia, N.Y.
driver only led the event just before the drop of the checkered
flag.
Greg Doust raced out to the
early lead at the start of the DIRT Sportsman main event from
the outside pole starting position. After five circuits Doust
was being followed in the top five by Jim Bowman, Sam Reakes IV,
Bates and Williams. Doust led the first 10-laps of the main
event. Bates took the lead away from Doust on lap-11 as he
worked up fast from the fifth starting position.
At the halfway mark Bates, the
current Fulton Speedway DIRT Sportsman point leader was being
followed in the top five by Doust, Williams, Russ Hefti and Jim
Bowman. Jeremy Pitcher, Mike Button, Brett Tonkin, Reakes and
Mark Yorker raced in positions sixth through tenth respectively.
It appeared that Bates would record another feature win until
Williams stole the victory away.
The 25-lap feature was only
slowed for two minor caution periods and the event found
numerous top runners move to the front. Williams came from the
11th starting position to earn the victory. Pitcher finished a
strong third after starting in the 14th position. Hefti came
from the 20th starting position to finish in the fourth
position. A total of 22 cars finished the event in the lead lap
in the competitive field.
