RECORDS IMPRESSIVE SHOWDOWN AT SUNDOWN VICTORY AT FULTON
SPEEDWAY IN FRONT OF HUGE OPENING NIGHT CROWD
FULTON, NY...Alan Johnson recorded an impressive victory
in the 2005 Grand Opening last Saturday at Fulton Speedway.
Johnson earned the win in the caution free 45-lap DIRT
Modified Showdown at Sundown in the Jeff Rudalavage owned,
WPC Associates sponsored ride. A huge opening night crowd
witnessed the season opener at the Home of the Dynomax
Victoria 200.
Justin Haers raced out to the early lead at the start
of the DIRT Modified Showdown at Sundown from the pole
starting position. After five circuits Haers continued to
lead and was followed in the top five by Chuck Bower, Alan
Johnson, Danny Johnson and Tim McCreadie. Johnson worked
past Ward to take over the second position on lap-15.
It took Johnson just one more circuit for Johnson to
take the lead away from Haers. At the halfway mark of the
8th Annual Showdown at Sundown Johnson was being chased in
the top five by Ward, Hears, Danny Johnson and Tim McCreadie.
Racing in positions sixth through tenth at the halfway mark
in order included Matt Sheppard, Tom Sears, Billy Decker,
Gary Tomkins and Tim Fuller.
With the race staying under green flag conditions
Johnson was able to keep and build his lead in and out of
lapped traffic. The battle of the race was for the second
position. Ward won the battle for the runner-up position
with Danny Johnson, McCreadie and Sheppard completing the
top five feature finishers. Haers, Fuller, Tomkins, Tom
Sears and Decker completed the top ten finishers in the very
competitive field.
Kevin Bates scored the opening night 20-lap DIRT
Sportsman feature race victory. The young Pennsylvania
driver was followed across the finish line by Russ Hefti,
Joey Williams, Mark Yorker and Greg Doust. Bates found room
under Hefti on lap-14 to take the feature lead which he
would never give back. Shawn Donath and Williams were also
feature race leaders.
Joe Stefanski recovered from an early race tangle to
win the opening 20-lap DIRT Pro Stock main event. Pete
Stefanski, Lee Burnett, John Pietrowicz and T.J. Fitzgibbons
completed the top five feature finishers behind Joe
Stefanski. Pietrowicz led the opening eight laps of the main
event. It was on lap nine when Joe Stefanski passed
Pietrowicz for the victory.
Defending Pure Stock Track Champion Rusty Marsden
earned the opening night victory in the 15-lap main event.
Chad Crouse, Phil Marsden, Steve Woodworth and Mike Welch
finished in positions second through fifth respectively.
Rusty Marsden took the lead away from Dan Hofmann Sr. on lap
eight and never gave it back. Hofmann earlier led the first
seven circuits.
Veteran Bill Anderson Sr. was the winner of the 25-lap
IMCA Modified Empire State Series Race. Larry Bezner, Jeff
Jones, Danny Ballard and Mike Jeffries finished in positions
second through fifth respectively. Anderson finally took the
top spot away from Dale Caswell on lap-20 after an
outstanding battle for the lead.
Action will continue this Saturday at Fulton Speedway
with the DIRT Big Block Modifieds, DIRT Sportsman, DIRT Pro
Stocks, Pure Stocks and the Four Cylinder Enduro drivers in
competition. Track gates will open at 5 p.m. with race
