FRIESEN WINS
BURKE'S DO IT BEST HOME CENTERS 100 LAP SHOWDOWN AT
SUNDOWN
FULTON, NY...Young Stewart Friesen claimed the win in
the Burke's Do It Best Home Centers 100-lap Showdown at
Sundown Turning Stone Casino 358 Modified Super DIRT
Series race at Fulton Speedway Tuesday night. Friesen
inherited the lead when Alan Johnson dropped out of the
event with just five laps to go. Friesen led the rest of
the distance and claimed the $3,000 victory in the
Madsen Overhead Doors DIRT 358 Modified.
Billy Decker jumped out to the early lead at the
start of the Burke's Do It Best Home Centers 100 from
the pole starting position. After five circuits Decker
continued to lead the way over the 30-car starting field
with Friesen, Jimmy Phelps, Pete Bicknell and Dale
Planck. Decker would lead the opening 17 laps of the
race.
Friesen was finally able to take the top spot away
from Decker on lap-18 after several laps of trying to do
so. Friesen soon had more pressure put on him as Alan
Johnson moved into second position on lap-20. It was on
lap-27 when Johnson took the lead away from Friesen as
the lead duo raced in lapped car traffic.
Once in front Johnson owned a comfortable lead,
with Friesen still in striking distance. Just when it
appeared that Johnson, the multi-time Fulton Speedway
Track Champion and Victoria 200 Champion had the victory
sealed, the engine expired on the car with just five
laps to go. Friesen inherited the lead and held off the
late race challenge of Dale Planck for the popular
victory.
Planck had to settle for second, his second
straight runner-up finish in the Showdown at Sundown.
Pat Ward, Tim Fuller and Pete Bicknell completed the top
five feature finishers. Decker, Todd Burley and Jeff
Rudalavage finished in positions sixth through eighth
respectively. Eight drivers finished the 100-lap
distance in the lead lap.
Sean Lias was the winner of the 25-lap Empire State
IMCA Modified Series race. Dale Caswell, Les Hubbard,
Mike Smith and Lyle Smith followed Lias across the
finish line. Lias passed Caswell for the lead on lap
nine and led the rest of the distance for the victory.
Russ Marsden stopped the five race win string of
Phil Marsden in the Pure Stock finale Tuesday night.
Ricky DeGroff, Phil Marsden, Dave Mannise and Dan
Hoffman Sr. finished in positions second through fifth
respectively. Marsden took the lead away from DeGroff on
lap-13 and led the rest of the distance during the best
feature race of the evening.
Action continues every Saturday night at Fulton
Speedway with track gates opening at 5 p.m. and race
competition starting at 7 p.m. The first major special
of the season at Fulton Speedway is set for Monday, June
21 when the World of Outlaws Late Model Series invades
the high-banked track. A DIRT Sportsman $1,000 to win
special will also be contested.
